It's time to recognize the women who lost their lives in WWII

The Eugene Grafius American Legion Post 104 at 1312 Broad Street is having an open to the public meeting on February 29th at 6PM in support of the Green Bridge being named for local woman Pfc. Eleanor Pauline Hanna, who lost her life serving in WWII.

The area she lost her life in was so remote that her body could not be recovered until many years later. She's now buried in Twin Hills Cemetery.

The women who served in WWII did so voluntarily. She could have stayed home in our safe and beautiful community, but she chose to face danger and ugliness in a war between good and evil.

A combat role is one of the primary benchmarks used to determine what veterans are memorialized, but women were not permitted combat roles. Elanor Hanna did everything she could in life to support her country.

It's proper to give recognition to Eleanor Hanna by naming the green bridge after her. The community desires it, her memory deserves it, and it sends a message to all who have served in any capacity, women in particular, that they are remembered and loved.

Community looks to name bridge after woman who served in WWII

Montoursville, Pa. — A local World War II veteran may soon have a bridge named in her honor.

The legion will hold a public meeting to discuss the naming on Feb. 29 at 6 p.m.

Members of the Eugene Grafius American Legion Post 104 legion are rallying support for naming the green bridge between Loyalsock and Montoursville after Private First Class Eleanor Pauline Hanna.

Hanna, a courageous servicewoman, lost her life in a plane crash while serving in a remote area during the war. Her remains were not recovered until many years later, and she now rests in peace at Twin Hills Cemetery, according to Steve Bagwell.

"She could have stayed home in our safe and beautiful community, but she chose to face danger and ugliness in a war between good and evil," said Bagwell.

Although combat roles traditionally serve as the primary criteria for memorializing veterans, women were not permitted to partake in such positions during WWII. Nevertheless, Eleanor Hanna dedicated her life to supporting her country in every way possible.

"It's proper to give recognition to Elanor Hanna by naming the green bridge after her. The community desires it, her memory deserves it, and it sends a message to all who have served in any capacity, women in particular, that they are remembered and loved," said Bagwell.

The meeting will be held at 1312 Broad Street in Montoursville on February 29th at 6 p.m.
